Here are some of the most important Do’s:
Do run hot water down your sink and shower drains to prevent clogs.
Do fill garbage disposal with ice and turn on to clean and sharpen blades.
Do keep toilet cover down before and after use.
Do turn off water supply if you’re going to be out of town for a few days.
Do check cutoff valves for damage at least twice a year.
Do repair leaks as soon as they are observed.
Do keep all plumbing paperwork, such as invoices, warranties and instructions.
Do keep your plumber’s contact information on hand, incase of emergencies.

Don’t stick your hand in the garbage disposal.
Don’t use drain cleaners that contain lye.
Don’t put a brick in your toilet tank to save water.
Don’t stick a wire down your drain to loosen a clog.
Don’t place waste bins under sinks, to avoid hitting pipes when emptying.
Don’t put dishes covered in food into your dish washer.
Don’t use a flame to defrost frozen pipes.
Don’t plant trees on top of sewage lines.
